We have here a plane that is named after another famous multi-role, the P-38 Lightning. Not long after the introduction of the F-35, it was given the nickname "Lightning II" after that famous aircraft from WWII. This plane is a 5th gen multirole, with three variants (at least initially) lettered A, B, and C. The A was for the Air Force, the B for the USMC, and the C for the Navy. Each have their own distinct features that make them unique. The F-35A is more nimble in its aerobatics, the F-35B is famous for its STOVL capabilities, and the F-35C is the variant with bigger wings that fold up and bulky landing gear to take the forces involved with carrier landings. This plane is still relatively new (if you consider 20+ years old new), but it's a formidable aircraft with the ability to strike targets from long range, and you likely won't see it coming.
